Chiropractors Help Alleviate Pain from Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia Pain Affects The Whole Body
Lots of times I’m asked if I can help with Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia and Chiropractic Treatment are indeed a good match. Many people aren’t sure what fibromyalgia is. It’s a chronic disease or disorder causing widespread pain and sensitivity to our entire system of muscles. When diagnosed with fibromyalgia, or FM, a patient will most commonly have an average of 11 to 20 specific tender points on the body. These are mostly in the back. Pain is just one symptom.
Patients also report disrupted sleep, mood changes, and chronic tiredness or fatigue. Also common are TMJ pain, IBS, autoimmune diseases and an array of psychological issues. Researchers say about 2% of the US population have it. The ratio of women being affected over men is 10 to 1. Finding relief from FM pain isn’t always easy. Today though, more and more people are turning to chiropractic for care.
Why? One reason could be that the most common areas affected by FM is the neck, mid and lower back, and large joints. This is an area chiropractors treat most often, and with great results. Many people with FM suffer with cervical spinal stenosis. When this happens, the meninges, or covering of the spinal nerves become compressed. The area of the body these nerves innervate, (send messages to) become painful.
Different techniques chiropractors use can decompress or take this pressure off and reduce the pain. There was a recent study done testing the effectiveness of chiropractic in treating and reducing the pain of FM. What they found was that after just 15 treatments the patients had significant positive results. Study patients reported a decrease in their musculoskeletal pain. They also had a reduction in chronic fatigue, and overall better sleeping patterns. At Ocean Integrated Wellness Centers we incorporate these techniques to help our patients with fibromyalgia. However, that’s not all! Research is showing great results for FM with acupuncture.
